The Barkleys, as it’s also called, is a series of five back-to-back marathons through a difficult maze of trails, with over 100,000 feet of elevation and, of course, a time limit. I first met Laz at the 2018 Barkley Fall Classic, then again at the actual Barkley marathons in 2019. During that period (123 days), the more than 19,000 participants - from all over the world - averaged over 5 miles per day to run (virtually from their hometown/country) a total of 635miles / 1021km, and so crossing virtually the entire state of Tennessee. This year he organized the Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee (#GVRAT), which started on May 1st and ended four months later. In 2018, he walked across the United States, starting in Rhode Island and ending in Oregon. His unusual races include the Barkley Marathons, Big's Backyard Ultra, Barkley Fall Classic, and The Vol State 500K. Laz (real name Gary Cantrell) is an endurance race designer and director. The Barkley course was the brain child of Gary 'Lazarus Lake' Cantrell and Karl Henn (Raw Dog). Somehow that sounded fun enough to sign up for, with Jeremy jumping on board to crew because it gave him a chance to hang out with everyone he ran with a few years ago.Episode 81 is another interview the enigmatic Lazarus Lake. It was one helluva experience to crew - the atmosphere was awesome, Laz + his family were great hosts + it was incredible to witness the determination of runners hour after hour. I went out to Tennessee to crew the race two years ago when Jeremy + Johan battled it out to a tie at 49 hours. ![]() *deep breath* Bigs is no “regular” ultra, it’s one of Laz’s races that was designed specifically to mess with your mind + force you to find your limits. Thanks so much to Lazarus Lake (Gary Cantrell) organiser of the infamous Barkley Marathons for this interview at the National Running Show 2020. Just after the Bear 100 racers took off from the start line I clicked through my inbox + hit “confirm” on my official Big Dog Backyard Ultra registration. Typing in my initials to sign away all liability + hitting “register” was weirdly exhilarating, even if it was only for the waitlist. How else do you describe someone whose life’s work is to keep his ultra at the brink of impossible, with just a 1 success rate. He is also a man with a beautifully warped mind. Gary Cantrell, aka Lazarus Lake, (or is it the other way around) could be the most creative person in the entire sport. He has also created the epic virtual team event, the Circumpolar Race Around The World which you and your friends can still join (if you dare). He is a true original, the man who created the toughest ultra in the world, The Barkley Marathons. Lazarus Lake is Gary Cantrell, the creator and race director of two of the hardest ultramarathons in the world, the Barkley Marathons and the Big Dog Backyard Ultra. ![]() While dumping half a paycheck worth of diesel into Big Red, en route to Utah to volunteer at the Bear 100, I impulsively tossed my name onto the waitlist for the Big Dog Backyard Ultra in Tennessee. Lazarus Lake is definitely in that pantheon.
